Welcome and thanks you for entering the 2012 edition of the Ride to the Horns sportives the original brainchild of F1 driver Mark Webber.
This year will again follow the successful format from last year with the Long route going over the Brill climbs before heading into the Chilterns and the short route doing the 2 laps passing through Mentmore and joining up with the long route on several parts of the course.
We have fallen foul of the recent weather conditions and our normal field car park on Cheddington road is unavailable due to the wet conditions and also the beautiful Mentmore Green will have certain restrictions imposed and will be subject to the weather over the next few days.
Please follow closely and read carefully the following information.
REGISTRATION WILL ONLY BE AVAILABLE ON SUNDAY MORNING 07.30-09.30,
In the MENTMORE VILLAGE HALL, next to the STAG PUB.
All riders will receive a free cuppa at Registration while collecting their timing chips which must be returned at the finish or these will be charged at £10 for a non return.
CAR PARKING will now be available on the road linking the B488 and LEDBORN ROAD ( This is actually on both routes and is 1 mile from the start) next to the railway bridge and is tarmac. Please note the car park has no toilet facilities.
PLEASE FOLLOW THE CAR PARK SIGNS FROM THE VILLAGE and LEDBORN ROAD and the B488. Parking is free but we would appreciate a donation to the Village Church Fund for all their help with the event.
PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO PARKING AVAILABLE IN THE VILLAGE
STARTS- LONG ROUTE WILL BE 08.00 to 09.00
SHORT ROUTE WILL BE 08.30 to 09.30
Short route riders please do not start before your TIME as we will need the time to ensure all the feed and routes have checked as this could spoil your ride.
There will be 2 feeds on the LONG route with the first at around 25miles and the exact location will be confirmed on the day at Registration.
The second feed will again be at the start of the CRONG CLIMB at Aston Clinton and here you will be joined by the SHORT ROUTE riders.
SHORT ROUTE feed will be at Aston Clinton after 31 miles but there will be DRINKS ONLY available at Mentmore when starting your 2nd lap at the Village Hall should you require them.
LONG ROUTE riders will receive a meal ticket in exchange for their timing chip which can be exchanged in the Village Hall where other refreshments will be on sale after the event.
PLEASE NOTE that last year we were very badly sabotaged just before the Chilterns, with 11 miles of signage stolen.
We have put in extra checks this year but advise all riders to familiarise yourselves with the route you are riding or download the GPX available.
THE ONUS WILL BE ON THE RIDER TO STAY ON COURSE
The route will have the familiar Wheels in Wheels routing with arrows at all turns and a confirmation within 200m of that turn there will be also arrows approximately every mile. Therefore if you don’t see arrows don’t turn and if you haven’t see an arrow for more than 2 miles retrace to the last known point.
PLEASE MAKE A NOTE OF THE EMERGENCY NUMBERS at REGISTRATION and be aware that certain parts of the course have poor or no mobile reception.
We will have out our BMW SERVICE BIKE to help keep you on the road, but we do expect you to repair punctures and minor problems. There will be spare tubes and wheels at both feeds, and on all our vehicles around the route.
Please remember this is a SPORTIVE and not a RACE and we reserve the right to remove any rider contravening the
HIGHWAY CODE. The timing is for your personal challenge only.
Have a good and safe ride.
Mentmore is home to the famous Stag pub and restaurant, where the event name originates from, and the beautiful village Green which hosts the Start and Finish, with the old Village Hall facilitating the signing on.
As we go to press many activities are planned on the Green and it is hoped to again run the family ride around the traditional 7mile route.
The route is famous for the sting in the tail with many challenging Chiltern climbs like Whiteleaf, the Crong, Dunsmore and the Hale all included in the later part of the route, and as the short route joins at the second feed Toms hill, Studmore and the famous Ivinghoe Beacon finish the ride before the final climb back to Mentmore.
Wheels and Wheels routing arrows will show the way and we have put in place a checking procedure before the riders to avoid the unfortunate theft of over 50 signs over an 11 mile part of the route in 2011. The usual sign before the turn plus at the turn are followed by a confirmation arrow within 200m of each turn. Arrows will be situated every mile on long stretches of road as reminders and warning signs will advise of danger points along the course.
This year Clifbar are to support us with their ranch of drinks, bars and Bloks at the 2 feed points complimenting the fruit and famous fruit cake at 30 and 60 mile approximately.
The short route will enjoy 1 feed at the same place as the 2nd long route feed.
Registration at the Village hall will be 7am to 09.30am on the Sunday, to collect your ride numbers and timing chips.
Car parking will as usual be situated on the edge of the village, it is free but a small contribution to the village funds will be very welcome.
PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO PARKING AVAILABLE IN THE VILLAGE AT ANY TIME.
Tea and coffee will be available at the start (Free to all riders) and riders will receive a replenishment snack on their return. Teas and cakes will be on sale after the event..
Entries will be £29.50 for the long route and £19.50 for the shorter ride, details of the family ride will published early in the New Year. On line entries will close at midnight on Wednesday 27th June and after then entries will be accepted on the day with a guaranteed ride at £35(long) and £25 for the short ride. Paper entries will be accepted up to 27th June at £32 for the long ride and £23 for the shorter route.
Wheels in Wheels will again be offering their full mechanical back up with the help of Phil Corley Cycles and their BMW Service Bike will be out and about to help sort out more than the odd puncture, to keep everyone on the road. We will also operate a Broom Wagon for those with terminal mechanicals or run out of legs.
The Start will from the Village Green (subject to weather conditions) at 08.00 to 09.00 for the long route and the Short route will be from 09.00 until 09.30. Please do not try and start early as we will want to check the route and set up the feeds. The short route which does in all good motorsport style has 2 laps passing through Mentmore after 26miles where you will be able to collect drinks only before you get to the feed at 31 miles, and then will finish on the Village Green along with the long route. (Later starts can be accommodated for those travelling by train)
We look forward to seeing you on Sunday July 1st 2012 and should you need any further information please do not hesitate to contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org
