RIDE TO THE HORNS 2012
Sunday 1st July 2012

ride to the horns cycling sportive

The 2012 edition of this now firm favourite will again follow the new routes of 2011 with extra activities for all the family all based on the beautiful village of Mentmore just outside Leighton Buzzard, in Buckinghamshire, only 30 miles from London with good train and road links.

Mentmore is home to the famous Stag pub and restaurant, where the event name originates from, and the beautiful village Green which hosts the Start and Finish, with the old Village Hall facilitating the signing on.

As we go to press many activities are planned on the Green and it is hoped to again run the family ride around the traditional 7mile route.

The route is famous for the sting in the tail with many challenging Chiltern climbs like Whiteleaf, the Crong, Dunsmore and the Hale all included in the later part of the route, and as the short route joins at the second feed Toms hill, Studmore and the famous Ivinghoe Beacon finish the ride before the final climb back to Mentmore.

Wheels and Wheels routing arrows will show the way and we have put in place a checking procedure before the riders to avoid the unfortunate theft of over 50 signs over an 11 mile part of the route in 2011. The usual sign before the turn plus at the turn are followed by a confirmation arrow within 200m of each turn. Arrows will be situated every mile on long stretches of road as reminders and warning signs will advise of danger points along the course.

This year Clifbar are to support us with their ranch of drinks, bars and Bloks at the 2 feed points complimenting the fruit and famous fruit cake at 30 and 60 mile approximately.

The short route will enjoy 1 feed at the same place as the 2nd long route feed.

Registration at the Village hall will be available on Saturday afternoon from 3pm until 6pm along with the 7am to 09.30am on the Sunday, to collect your ride numbers and timing chips.

Car parking will as usual be situated on the edge of the village, run by the scouts it is free but a small contribution to their funds will be very welcome.

PLEASE NOTE THERE WILL BE NO PARKING AVAILABLE IN THE VILLAGE AT ANY TIME.

Tea and coffee will be available at the start and the villagers will be operating an afternoon tea stall to help raise funds for the Village Church.

Entries will be £29.50 for the long route and £19.50 for the shorter ride, details of the family ride will published early in the New Year. On line entries will close at midnight on Wednesday 27th June and after then entries will be accepted on the day with a guaranteed ride at £35(long) and £25 for the short ride. Paper entries will be accepted up to 27th June at £32 for the long ride and £23 for the shorter route.

Wheels in Wheels will again be offering their full mechanical back up with the help of Phil Corley Cycles and their BMW Service Bike will be out and about to help sort out more than the odd puncture, to keep everyone on the road. We will also operate a Broom Wagon for those with terminal mechanicals or run out of legs.

The Start will from the Village Green at 08.00 to 09.00 for the long route and the Short route will be from 09.00 until 09.30. Please do not try and start early as we will want to check the route and set up the feeds. The short route which does in all good motorsport style has 2 laps passing through Mentmore after 26miles where you will be able to collect drinks only before you get to the feed at 31 miles, and then will finish on the Village Green along with the long route. (Later starts can be accommodated for those travelling by train)
