SHORT ROUTE 27.7miles
'Smarting'

50Km / 27.7miles Smarting Route

The sore route is so called because it is likely to leave you smarting both on the way round and when you have finished. The route starts with rolling hills which get progressively harder the further round you go with a 493m of climbing it is not the most demanding of routes but is sure is one of the the prettiest.

The ride starts with a lap of Tedworth Park and heads out towards Bulford past the military shooting ranges where you get great views of Salisbury Plain, on your right. Dropping down into Bulford you can see the Kiwi Hill on the left, a memorial to the Kiwi Soldiers garrisoned after the First World War, it is some 130 metres high and over 1.5 acres in area! A right turn sees you quickly drop down to the Bulford Droveway where herders used to shepherd their sheep to Market in Salisbury continue on and  turn right and head  up the Avon Valley. This quite road is quite challenging with numerous small inclines and descents. The villages of Figheldean, Netheravon,  Enford and Chissenbury are ridden through until you turn right at the end and climb up Rowdens Cleeve and past Trenchard Lines with Upavon airfield on the Right.  A rolling couple of miles takes you through to Everleigh home of the haunted Crown Pub, still with gallows out the front, although these days it holds up the pub sign!  Left to Collingbourne Ducis followed by a climb up to Ludgershall and descent back into Tidworth and Tedworth Park finally completes the section.
