The agony route is so called because it is likely to leave you in agony once finished. The route starts with rolling hills which get progressively harder the further round you go with a 1207m of climbing it is not the most demanding of routes but is sure is the prettiest.
Section 1 Tedworth Park to Market Lavington. 34 miles
The ride starts with a lap of Tedworth Park and heads out towards Bulford past the military shooting ranges where you get great views of Salisbury Plain, to the right. Dropping into Bulford you can see the Kiwi Hill on the left, a memorial to the Kiwi Soldiers garrisoned after the First World War, it is some 130 metres high and over 1.5 acres in area! A right turn sees you quickly drop down to the Bulford Droveway where herders used to shepherd their sheep to Market in Salisbury sees you turning right and following up the Avon Valley. Several short sharp climbs later you cross the river Avon and head towards Wood Henge, a Neolithic site approximately 4300 years old is sited within the Durrington walls, a Neolithic site surrounded by an earth bank some 500m in diameter. From here you pass through Larkhill, home of the Royal Artillery and pass Stonehenge (visible from the road) and head towards the Bustard pub, which is now HQ for the [] team introducing the Bustard[] which is the largest flying bird in the world, back to the UK. From here the route joins the military Southern Transit Route, normally a military only route but opened up for the events by the MoD. This route tracks to the North of Tilshead where you head North on the A360 into West Lavington and then East to market Lavington to the feed stop at 34 miles.
Section 2 Market Lavington to Tedworth Park feed stop. 36 miles
Once refreshed at the feed station the route heads of on the leisurely route in the Vale of Pewsey with views to Salisbury Plain ramping up to the right. This road meanders through Urchfont, Wedhampton and then to Chirton where you turn left and cross the vale of Pewsey towards the Alton Barnes White Horse on the hill. You will climb up the hill to some stunning views across the Vale of Pewsey. Once over the top the gradual descent takes you through the pretty village of Lockeridge Dean passing the 50 mile marker. A right turn shortly after takes you south through West Woods and then around Pewsey to the significant climb of Pewsey Hill, Another white horse is visible on the left as you approach the climb. Once over the top then the rolling road takes you through to Everleigh home of the haunted Crown Pub, still with gallows out the front, although these days it holds up the pub sign! Left to Collingbourne Ducis followed by a climb up to Ludgershall and descent back into Tidworth and Tedworth Park finally completes the section.
Section 3 Tedworth Park to Tedworth Park. 30 miles
Refreshed again you head out of the park and through Shipton Bellinger a left turn takes you along a beautiful tree lined route towards Thruxton motor racing circuit. Through Fyfield and straight over the road you drop down into Appleshaw and start the climb to Tangley and up to Conholt Hill it is a gradual climb but your legs will feel it come the end! Dropping down Conholt Hill and turning left you pass through the pretty villages of Oxenwood and Marden until a double left where you hit the sharp climb of Wexcomb, a steady ride back through Ludgershall and down to Tedworth Park finally completes the ride. Now you can enjoy some of the hearty range stew and collect your ride certificate. Give yourself a pat on the back, Well done!
