Another eventful year for Wheels in Wheels Events

cycling sportives 2009

Now that 2009 has come to a close it is time for the Wheels in Wheels Team to reflect on what has been a great year for cycling.

In 2009 we added a new sportive to our growing list of events and so the Midland Monster was born. This is the only truly midland based sportive starting and finishing in Burton on Trent but still offers a punishing tour around the lower Peak District. This event followed two weeks after our 4th Forest of Dean Classic which sold out again and as a result we have increased the entry to 1000 in 2010.

Ride to the Horns, the brainchild of F1 driver Mark Webber, offered a great mix of English garden fete and tough sportive coming together on the village green. This proved a very successful combination and many families turned out for their own rides and entertainment.

In July we launched the first Richardson’s Rumble which proved a great come and try sportive with a nice route and the odd tester to complete the 100miler. Based in St Ives, Cambridgeshire, the quiet roads and beautiful scenery make this a perfect starter event.

Our jewel in the crown came in September when the 3rd Ride the Route or Tour of Worcestershire took to dry roads following much of the Tour of Britain route from previous years with our own twist to make this our toughest event. All the classic Worcestershire climbs like Gt Malvern, Ankerdine and Stanhope Bank, plus our “killer option” Wynniattes Way are included in the 19 listed climbs. Many riders have now found that Worcestershire isn’t as flat as they first thought.

Wheels in Wheels would like to thank all the riders that took part in our events in 2009 and we hope you will be able to return to enjoy our sportive calendar in 2010 which will offer many new innovations and challenging routes as usual. We have changed our dates to avoid a major sporting attraction that will take place and again we will offer our unique and successful routing system plus a few extras to keep everyone on the road and mechanically sound.

Again we have our International sportive with the Duva 2 Day in Mallorca and to help you prepare for the rigours of a UK sportive season we are offering training camps from the Duva Hotel in March and also one that includes the Duva International in April.

We at Wheels in Wheels would like to wish everyone a very Happy and successful New Year and look forward to seeing you all again in 2010.
